The Story

How the twins were born

Nov 2023

Three arrive in Seoul

Ravi, an adventurer from Calgary. Lian, a sleepy princess from Tokyo. Sei, a cautious gourmet.

Three red pandas landed at Seoul Grand Park. At the time, there were only six red pandas in all of Korea.

2024

The first failure

A female red panda can conceive for only two or three days a year. They startle at footsteps. If they gain weight, they won't breed at all.

That first year, Lian and Sei didn't work out. The window closed. Everyone waited another year.

2025–2026

The window opens again

The keepers changed everything. A new partner: Ravi. A hand-built shelter to block the noise. Fresh bamboo shoots — Lian's favorite — every single day. 24-hour cameras. Weigh-ins, again and again.

And the window that opens only three days a year opened again.

On weaning day, the public voted. The older sister became Marron — French for "chestnut". The younger brother became Maru — Korean for "the summit".

This November, they show their faces to the world for the first time.

Debuting for the planet

Fewer than 10,000 red pandas remain in the wild — half of what there were in 1997. Their forests are being cut, they are poached, and they are sold as pets. Marron and Maru were born in Seoul. Their cousins are disappearing in the Himalayas.

Every third Saturday of September, International Red Panda Day, Chestnuts flood the timeline with red panda memes and fan art. One day. One message.
